Rickard Rydell and Tiago Monteiro have been victorious at the sixth meeting of the World Touring Car Championship staged this weekend at the Portuguese racetrack of Estoril. The SEAT drivers took the victory in both races, with Yvan Muller finishing third and second respectively. With this result, SEAT keep three drivers in the top three positions of the drivers’ championship and increase their advantage in the constructors’ championship.

Both in the first and second races, the SEAT Sport drivers had to fight hard for the victory, having their rivals at their wheels at all times. Rydell opened a gap of at least one second to Larini (Chevrolet) in the first race, whilst Monteiro had to overtake Porteiro (BMW) who stayed in his slipstream almost until the finish, when he was overtaken by Muller and Priaulx (BMW), who were less than three tenths apart. With the SEAT León TDI driver crossing the finish line before the BMW, Muller achieved the third one-two finish of the season for the Spanish make, after Brazil and Mexico.

Jordi Gené also managed to score after a first excellent race and a hard fight with Robert Huff (Chevrolet) and Andy Priaulx (BMW), thus getting valuable points for the championship, whilst Gabriele Tarquini was not able to finish in the points in none of the races. Pierre Yves Corthals rounded-off SEAT’s success taking the Independents' Trophy in the first race.

Tiago Monteiro (SEAT León TDI no. 18), 7th/1st: “ A phantastic weekend and a very special one for me. After the victory in Mexico I’ve had a run of average results. I want to thank the team for their help and their great job. They have allowed me and the whole team to get this excellent result in Estoril with Rickard’s victory, mine and both podium finishes of Yvan. I’m very happy”.

Rickard Rydell (SEAT León TDI no. 10), 1st/8th: "A very good weekend for the team and for me, and I’m happy with my performance, both in practice and in the first race with my first victory of the season. It wasn't as good in the second race, but I think that we can be happy all together".

N.Technology ha ottenuto la miglior prestazione nel corso dei test ufficiali FIA WTCC svoltisi oggi a Monza. Con il tempo 2:00.918 James Thompson sì è imposto sugli altri 15 piloti scesi in pista in rappresentanza di tutti i Costruttori del Campionato.

Nel corso della giornata tipicamente estiva con temperature anche al di sopra di 36°, il lavoro del team è stato indirizzato sullo sviluppo della Honda Accord Euro R Super 2000, per la prima volta protagonista a Monza.   

"Davvero una gran bel momento!" ha dichiarato Thompson. "Il miglior tempo di oggi dimostra che stiamo migliorando costantemente. Abbiamo girato meno degli altri perché abbiamo lavorato molto sulla vettura tra un'uscita e l'altra. Direi proprio che ne è valsa la pena...Con ogni probabilità in gara gli altri saranno più competitivi, ma il risultato di oggi è un'ulteriore conferma dei progressi che stiamo facendo. Passo dopo passo sono sicuro che ritorneremo ad occupare le posizioni che ci competono."

Il prossimo evento del FIA WTCC è in programma il 12-13 luglio al Circuito do Estoril in Portogallo.

Brno 2008 rimarrà a lungo nella memoria degli appassionati di gare turismo. Il fine settimana appena concluso ha regalato un Alessandro Zanardi quasi imbattibile, probabilmente al più alto livello dal suo rientro alle competizioni nel 2003.

Dopo la pole position di ieri, il pilota bolognese non ha avuto rivali in gara uno. Dopo aver perso la prima posizione nella partenza lanciata a favore del compagno di squadra, nelle prime battute della corsa Zanardi ha immediatamente riconquistato la leadership, per poi aumentare giro dopo giro il suo vantaggio su Porteiro, autore del giro più veloce della gara. La doppietta conquistata sotto la bandiera a scacchi, la prima nel WTCC per Roal Motorsport, ha scatenato una grande festa prima al muretto box e quindi sotto il podio. Lo svizzero della Chevrolet Alain Menu completa il podio di Gara 1.

Nella seconda manche Zanardi, partito dalla ottava posizione, ha costruito un capolavoro tattico che gli ha consentito di risalire la classifica sfruttando duelli ed errori degli avversari, fino ad arrivare, a quattro giri dalla bandiera a scacchi, alle spalle del leader della corsa Gabriele Tarquini. Con un passo di circa un secondo più veloce al giro il pilota del BMW Team Italy-Spain ha raggiunto nell'ultima tornata la Seat dell'avversario, abbozzando un attacco all´ultima curva dopo aver stabilito il giro più veloce della corsa. Terzo al traguardo della seconda sfida di Brno è stato il brasiliano Augusto Farfus al volante della BMW.

Per quanto riguarda il Trofeo Indipendenti lo spagnolo Sergio Hernandez su BMW fa segnare un'importante doppietta.

Roberto Ravaglia (Team Principal Roal Motorsport): ”Sapevamo che Brno era un circuito favorevole, ma sinceramente non mi aspettavo un successo del genere. La pole, una vittoria, due secondi posti e i giri veloci di entrambe le corse sono il riassunto di una supremazia resa possibile dal lavoro di tutti gli uomini del team, a cui va il mio ringraziamento. Zanardi ha guidato in modo fantastico durante tutto il fine settimana: aggressivo in qualifica, veloce in gara uno e tattico in gara due nell’”accontentarsi” del secondo posto in una corsa  dove, con le due macchine in quarta fila, consideravo un buon risultato il quarto o il quinto posto. Perfetto anche il weekend di Porteiro, nonostante sia stato penalizzato in gara due da alcuni contatti che hanno compromesso la sua vettura. Ha combattuto come un leone, conquistando un quinto posto di grande valore sportivo.”

Alessandro Zanardi: “Ieri dopo la pole ero sinceramente felice. Il “giro secco” ha un grande valore per un pilota, perché è lì che spesso si vede chi ne ha di più, chi è il più veloce. Considerando il livello del WTCC è stata una soddisfazione inaspettata, per cui stento ancora a capacitarmi di quello che è successo oggi. La vittoria in gara uno è un merito che va distribuito tra tutti gli uomini del BMW Team Italy-Spain, che fin dai test di giovedì hanno fatto un lavoro eccellente. Non è falsa retorica: è stato un trionfo di tutta la squadra, compreso il mio compagno Felix Porterio con il quale ho lavorato a lungo alla definizione dell’assetto sulla base di quanto avevamo fatto lo scorso anno.  Sono convinto che questo successo rafforzerà ulteriormente il clima d grande fiducia all’interno del nostro team: la consapevolezza di poter contare su un pilota in grado di fare la differenza può essere una motivazione in più per tutta la squadra, così come essere il terminale di un gruppo eccezionale come il nostro mi spinge a dare il massimo in ogni volta che scendo in pista. E’ difficile descrivere le emozioni che sto provando in queste ore: non abbiamo vinto grazie all’inversione parziale della griglia di partenza o perché qualcuno davanti si è ritirato. Abbiamo vinto semplicemente perché oggi eravamo noi i più forti. E considerando il valore degli avversari, non possiamo che esserne estremamente fieri.”

Inizia nel migliore dei modi il weekend di Brno per il BMW Team Italy-Spain. Negli ultimi minuti di una combattuta sessione di qualifiche Alessandro Zanardi ha conquistato la pole position, staccando di poco più di un decimo il compagno di squadra Felix Porteiro, terzo. Ad inserirsi tra le due BMW ci ha pensato lo svizzero della Chevrolet Alain Menu, che sarà sulla griglia di partenza davanti all'altro pilota Chevrolet, il britannico Robert Huff, autore del quarto tempo. Le Seat Di Gabriele Tarquini e Tiago Monteiro prenderanno il via dalla terza fila, mentre James Thompson al volante della Honda Accord Euro R Super 2000 partirà dalla settima posizione, la sua migliore prestazione stagionale nelle prove di qualificazione del Mondiale.

Roberto Ravaglia (Team principal BMW Team Italy-Spain):  "Tutta la squadra ha lavorato in modo semplicemente perfetto fin dalle prove libere. Brno è una pista storicamente favorevole ai nostri colori, ma il risultato di oggi è straordinario. I piloti hanno realizzato due giri veloci di grande valore tecnico e senza alcun errore.
Nel finale della sessione ritenevo molto difficile riuscire a migliorare il tempo fatto registrare dalle Chevrolet, ma Zanardi da grande campione nell´ultimo giro è riuscito a fare la differenza ."

Alessandro Zanardi: " Il mio ultimo miglior tempo in qualifica in una gara internazionale risaleva al 1997. davvero un sacco di tempo! Il risultato di oggi chiude in un certo senso il cerchio dopo l´incidente del 2001 e sinceramente pensavo che non sarei più riuscito a mettermi tutti dietro sul giro secco. Certo, negli ultimi anni ho vinto due gare nel WTCC, ma la pole per me ha un sapore molto particolare e, nonostante non abbia alcun valore per la classifica, credetemi che mi ha reso felice forse più di una vittoria. Domani mi aspetta una grande opportunità: il team ha svolto come al solito un grandissimo lavoro e la macchina è molto veloce anche con i pneumatici usati. Incrociate le dita!"

BMW celebrated its first race wins of the 2008 WTCC season. Here, you find a lap by lap analysis of rounds seven and eight in Pau. 

Race 1 – Lap by lap

Start - From pole position Augusto Farfus controls the pace for the rolling start and keeps Yvan Muller behind him. Andy Priaulx loses one position and is in eighth. He is trailed by Jörg Müller, who improved to ninth. Alessandro Zanardi remains 12th, Félix Porteiro is running in 15th.

Lap 1 - In the “Virage du Lycée” corner, Zanardi and Alain Menu collide, resulting in a spin for the Chevrolet driver. Behind Menu, the field gets stuck in a jam. The race is red-flagged, and the cars line up on the grid again in finishing order, where they stayed for 20 minutes.

Re-Start - The field gets underway again in single file behind the safety-car. When the lights go green, Farfus successfully defends his lead. The other BMW national team drivers also manage to hold their positions.

Lap 6 - Farfus has already built up a gap of 2.769 seconds to Muller. With 1:22.682 minutes he records the fastest lap of the race.

Finish - Farfus claims BMW’s maiden win of the season, crossing the line 17.851 seconds ahead of Muller. Priaulx secures pole position for race two and another championship point by finishing eighth. Müller has to make do with a thankless ninth. Zanardi comes 12th, Porteiro takes the chequered flag in 15th.

Race 2 – Lap by lap

Start - Due to torrential rain, the race is started after three laps behind the safety-car. Priaulx defends his lead. Farfus and Müller keep eighth and ninth respectively, while Zanardi and Porteiro run in12th and 15th place.

Lap 4 - Farfus overtakes Muller for seventh.

Lap 5 - Farfus takes sixth from Jordi Gené. Müller is passed by Menu.

Lap 6 - Gené drops back, with Müller, Zanardi and Porteiro all gaining one position.

Lap 10 - Müller loses ninth to James Thompson.

Lap 13 - Müller, Zanardi and Porteiro improve by one place after an accident to Menu.

Lap 14 - Zanardi tries to get past Müller, but goes wide into a run-off zone. He rejoins in 12th.

Lap 17 - Following an off-track moment, Müller drops back to 11th. A littler later he was passed by Zanardi and Porteiro.

Finish - Priaulx celebrates his tenth WTCC victory. Farfus scores three points by finishing sixth. Zanardi takes 11th, Müller and Porteiro follow in 12th and 13th respectively.

Rob Huff scored his and Chevrolet’s first win of the year in Valencia today, a feat repeated later in the day by team mate Alain Menu in the second race. The British driver had started from the second row on the grid and used the superior handling of his Chevrolet Lacetti to pick off the front runners one by one. After a few laps he moved into the lead never to be headed again. Alain Menu, who had started last of the qualified drivers, drove a stellar first race which saw him finish in eighth, good for pole position in the second race. In that second race he took the lead on lap 2 and scored his first win of the year, followed home by Rob Huff who had cut through the field from eighth to second. Nicola Larini had an unlucky weekend and finished in sixth and ninth. Chevrolet now moves up to second place in the manufacturers’ championship, while Huff is first of the Chevrolet drivers in seventh.

Rob Huff (1st/2nd): “I had a good start in race 1 and immediately got ahead of the SEATs halfway down the straight. But then the diesels just towed past me again before the first corner, so I had to be content with fourth for a while. I was already pleased that I had made it through the first corner because in the previous three seasons my race had always ended right there. Yvan then ran wide in one corner which allowed me to get past him, then Jordi ran wide as well and both Gabriele and I slipped through. I then managed to pass Gabriele on lap 5 and stayed in control until the end. In the second race I could confirm the strength and speed of the Chevrolet Lacetti and bagged 18 points in one day. The Chevrolets had been on the pace all weekend, although it of course helped us to run light here. Today’s victories are very much the result of the hard work the team has put in since we’re back from Mexico.”

Alain Menu (8th/1st): “I had a good first race and managed to profit from the many incidents ahead of me. The whole race some of the driving of the others was really on the limit and on a few occasions I nearly went off. I was lucky when Thompson closed the door on me but it was a little bit too late: I was through. I then passed Zanardi for eighth on the straight but he just pushed me onto the grass, nearly causing me to spin at to speed. I think this time he really exaggerated in his maneuvers as this was extremely dangerous at the speed we were doing. But I did get by him a few corners later, which put me on pole position for race 2. In the second race I knew I’d get passed by Andy at the start, but after the first lap I slowly started to reel him in to the point where I could pass him on lap 2. From then on it was just a matter of keeping the car on the black stuff.”
